Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
